I'm of the fairer sex, and your article made me look at my bookshelf. Interesting. Most of the best sci. fi is written by men, much of the best fantasy by women, and the best ethnic/geographical fiction (my weekness) is definitely ruled by women. I will try to redress the balance on Sci fi! :-)

What an excellent article. I found it to be highly interesting as I'd often thought of the book Never Let Me Go, as well as the movie and tried to place them in the right genre, which of course as you point out well, cannot be done. I will check out Cloud Atlas as well as the links posted here. Well done and thanks.

Such a wonderful book, I've read it a handful of times. The characters are just incredible!

I'm not into religious stories, but this is one of my favorites. Sure, there are religious characters, and there are plenty of discussions about religion, but it's not a religious story. It's just a story, which happens to have religious characters. I'd think it would be the perfect story for people who normally wouldn't read a book that's got religious aspects, because The Sparrow isn't preachy at all, and my Jesus meter pings pretty easy.

Yeah, I loved 2001 A Space Odyssey as well -- and the rather lame sequel, 2010 (probably Hyams' best film -- what a horrible director)....

Well I'm glad that I'm not alone in my love/fascination of this film at least.

Thinking about it I do wonder how much of my interest in sci fi was developed through watching film's as a child that made very little sense at the time; Dune, Disney's The Black Hole, 2001 A Space Odyssey to name a few. Lots of brillant images but it would take a whole lot more reading before I knew what the hell was going on!

A glorious failure of a film -- I couldn't agree more! It tried so hard and failed so miserably! haha, I loved it -- in a weird sort of I know what you're "trying" to do way.

So much potential went into that movie - the director, the musical score, the epic scenery. . . but just like you said, it made zero sense to anyone who hadn't read the book. I saw the '84 movie when I was about 10 years old, and although I didn't understand anything that was going on, it sure looked cool, and inspired me to read the book a few years later. Been hooked on SF ever since!

Thanks for reviewing this book. It's one of my favorite sf books, even though, it is bleak. I think it's the bleakness that attracts me to it. Something totally from the left field of sf. Maybe that should be left quadrants. Anyway, keep up the good work!
